✔️ Pharmacology
  • Valsartan is a specific angiotensin II antagonist with oral activity.
  • It acts on the AT1 subtype of angiotensin II receptors.
  • Angiotensin II is a substance that, when it binds to its receptors, causes blood vessels to narrow (vasoconstriction).
  • This narrowing of blood vessels leads to an increase in blood pressure (hypertension).
  • Valsartan blocks the angiotensin II receptors, specifically targeting the AT1 subtype.
  • By blocking the effects of angiotensin II, Valsartan can dilate blood vessels.
  • Valsartan's action on blood vessels helps lower blood pressure.
  • Importantly, it achieves this without affecting the pulse rate.
  • The affinity of Valsartan for the AT1 receptor is significantly higher than that for the AT2 receptor, approximately 20,000 times.
  • Valsartan does not bind to or block other hormone receptors or ion channels that are known to be important for cardiovascular regulation.
